There’s a wedding look that’s everywhere these days. You’ve probably noticed it: neutral linens, pampas grass, serif fonts on signs, and a color palette that could suit anyone. It looks nice, but it doesn’t reflect who you are.
In over 16 years of planning weddings, I’ve seen that the most memorable ones are always true to the couple. When a wedding looks like everyone else’s, it just feels generic.
It’s not about a version of you or something inspired by Pinterest. It’s about what’s real.
Why “Inspired By” Is Not the Same as “Designed For You”
Inspiration boards help you get started. The goal is to give you insight into what you like and don’t like.
When I meet with couples, I ask about times when they felt most themselves—maybe a special trip, a dinner party that lasted late into the night, or the restaurant where they first really connected. That’s the feeling your wedding should capture, not what’s trending. It should feel warm, inviting, and, most importantly, tell your story in a way that makes guests feel part of it, not just coming to your wedding.
Gen Z couples are moving away from standard wedding formulas. They want celebrations that feel personal, real, and lived-in. Their choices show how important authenticity is. Here at Jaclyn Watson Events, we love this thought process as we design every wedding around you, not a Pinterest page or a best friend’s wedding, but around you, the client, and your story.
What It Actually Means to Design Around Your Story
When I say “your story,” I don’t mean a hashtag or a cute card at the welcome table.
I’m talking about the real, meaningful details that make you who you are.
Maybe one of you spent summers on a Vermont lake, while the other grew up in a city where the best nights meant long dinners and loud music. Maybe you both love a certain era of film, a favorite cuisine, or the smell of a place after it rains. Maybe your families come from different cultures, and both should feel at home at your wedding. All of those details should be part of your wedding.
Here’s how I bring those details into your wedding:
Our first conversations are more important than any mood board. Before I look for inspiration photos, I want to know how you live—how you host, what you like to eat, what makes your friends and family laugh, and what your perfect evening looks like. The design grows from those conversations.
Your guests’ experience is part of your story, too. A wedding isn’t just about the couple; it’s about the people who love you, and when they walk into your wedding, they instantly feel who you are. The music they hear when they arrive, the food that means something to you, and the small moments that let people connect all matter. That’s what real design looks like. It feels like hospitality. It feels like many small moments that leave lasting impressions.
Every detail should have a purpose. I always suggest elements that add meaning, not just because they look trendy. Decoration by itself misses the chance to tell your story.
The Template Problem (And Why It Costs You More Than You Think)
A wedding built from a template isn’t just less personal; it’s also less efficient.
If a planner starts with a pre-made look and just adds your names, you end up making choices that don’t really fit you. You spend money on things that don’t matter because someone said you should, and you give up things that do matter because they don’t fit the package.
I’ve worked with couples who felt overwhelmed after trying to plan on their own. They were given choices that weren’t really choices. Everything looked okay, but nothing felt right. That’s what happens when you start with the look, not your story.
When you design your wedding around your story, decisions become easier. You spend on what matters and skip what doesn’t reflect you. This way, your wedding truly feels like yours.
What This Looks Like at Jaclyn Watson Events
We only take on a few weddings each year—not to be exclusive, but because creating something personal takes our full attention. You can’t build a truly personal wedding if you’re juggling too many at once.
Here’s what you can expect when we work together:
We start by getting to know you—not just your Pinterest board, but who you really are. Our early conversations help me understand what matters to you and what doesn’t.
We design from the inside out, making sure the look and feel reflect you, your values, and your guests’ experience.
We handle the big picture. Design isn’t separate from everything else—it has to fit with your timeline, venue, vendors, and guests. We make sure it all comes together the way it should.
On your wedding day, when you walk into the room for the first time, you should feel like you’re exactly where you belong—not in someone else’s wedding, but in your own.
